Today, I had lunch with Aaron at his work and while I was driving over, I thought about the first time he told me he loved me.
It was during November of 2005, my first semester of college. We hadn't been dating very long. Less than a month, actually. One night, I was in my friend Melissa's room in our dorm. We were supposed to be studying, but I was secretly chatting with Aaron on AIM [anyone remember AIM?]. I told him I needed to get going to bed. He said, "Je t'eime." I felt my chest tighten with excitement because I wondered what that might mean, and if it meant what I hoped it meant. I Googled it and sure enough... But I thought there must be some mistake. He wouldn't be telling me this. Not now. Not so soon. Not online. Then he told me that it means "I love you".
The next day, we had university-wide chapel in the morning. He walked me back to my dorm after, with his obnoxious roommate trailing awkwardly along. I remember that it was a sunny day, somewhat warm for November. We got back to my building, holding hands, then Aaron started fidgeting and acting anxious. He was so cute! Then he blurted out, "I love you!" really quick, as if he was scared to say it. Awkward as it may have been, to me it was wonderful and I still smile when I think back on it.
Later, he told me that he first told me online because that was the very moment he realized he loved me, and we were both under dorm curfew restrictions so he couldn't walk over and tell me in person.
He asked me to marry him two months later. =)
For those of you who are married? Do you remember the first time your spouse said it to you?
